What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is a form of self-defence that revolves around grappling and ground-based combat. It focuses on taking your opponent to the ground where you will have the advantage against your opponent. Bringing your opponent to the ground and using submissions to best your opponent is the main idea that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu brings to the table. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu also revolves around the concept of someone being much smaller or weaker than someone but still is able to prevail using a variety of special techniques taught at Hurstville Martial Arts. Students will have the opportunity to test the techniques that they learn during the lessons when they are sparring/rolling. Sparring and rolling are included in the classes of Hurstville Martial Arts and it is also encouraged for students to participate in competitions/tournaments that occur throughout the year.  Sparring and rolling not only gives you the chance to test the techniques you have learnt but it also allows you to feel what it is like to be in a real fight and what you would do if you really did end up in a situation where you would have to rely on your skills. Like most martial arts, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ranks their students using a belt system where everybody will start as a white belt and they slowly work their way up to becoming a purple belt then a brown belt and eventually a black belt.

Benefits of choosing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu comes with many benefits. The first benefit is obviously self-defence. Learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu will give you the knowledge and experience that you need to be able to defend yourself if you or if someone you know is in danger. Another benefit of learning Jiu-Jitsu is that throughout your journey, you develop humility and discipline. Sparring and rolling encourages people to be humble when you lose and the only way to improve is to learn from your mistakes. Getting beaten is normal in fights and the only way to overcome that obstacle is to improve. Making friends and having fun is also one of the most important benefits in learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu encourages you to interact with your fellow students and help each other learn and improve upon your level. Having fun is equally important to making friends as people are more likely to do well in an area where they enjoy or is interested in.

"Build confidence in yourself"

The confidence building part of our BJJ program is what students appreciate the most. Nothing can take the place of the security in knowing that you can defend yourself.

Learning BJJ gives you the best chance in a self-defence situation

Self defense is a skill you would be led to believe is universal in all martial arts. The simple definition of martial arts means "military arts", teaching a person how to defend one’s self, family and country. The sad reality of this is that many martial arts schools are not teaching realistic self defense for the 21st century. At our school, everything we teach is reality based. Our instructors work very hard to insure that most any situation you might encounter is covered in the classroom under very safe learning conditions, so you will be prepared.
